Most websites will tell you that the journey from CDG to central Paris takes 30 to 45 minutes. This is sometimes true. On a mid-morning weekday with no traffic, taking a direct private transfer on a good route, 45 minutes is achievable. In many other circumstances, the reality is different. This article gives you an honest picture of what to expect.
By RER B Train
The RER B is the most frequently cited option for getting from CDG to Paris. The advertised journey time from CDG Terminal 2 to Gare du Nord is 25 minutes, and from Gare du Nord to Chatelet is a further 5 minutes.
In practice, add 20 to 30 minutes for the total process. You need to find the RER B station within CDG, buy a ticket, wait for the next train, board and find space for your luggage. On busy arrivals periods, particularly on Monday mornings and Sunday evenings, trains can be overcrowded. Real-time journey time: typically 50 to 70 minutes from stepping off your plane to stepping onto the platform at Chatelet.
By Taxi
A taxi from CDG to central Paris follows the road network. Journey time varies considerably:
- Best case (mid-morning, no traffic): 40 to 50 minutes
- Standard weekday morning rush (07:30 to 09:00): 60 to 80 minutes
- Friday evening: 75 to 100 minutes or more
Add 15 to 20 minutes to reach the taxi rank, queue and wait for an available vehicle. Total realistic time: 55 to 90 minutes on a normal day.
By Private Transfer
A private transfer has the same road constraints as a taxi, but with important differences. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall immediately on exit from customs, so there is no waiting at a rank. The vehicle is pre-confirmed for your luggage requirements. And a professional driver who knows CDG departs from the terminal via routes that avoid the worst of the airport exit congestion.
Realistic journey times by private transfer:
- Off-peak (before 07:00 or after 21:00): 35 to 50 minutes to most central destinations
- Standard daytime (09:30 to 16:30): 45 to 60 minutes
- Morning rush (07:30 to 09:30): 60 to 90 minutes
- Friday evening (17:00 to 20:00): 70 to 100 minutes
Planning Buffer Time for Departures
If your flight departs at 10:00 and you need to be at the terminal by 08:00, when should your transfer leave your hotel? Allow at minimum: journey time plus 30 minutes. For morning rush departures, add an extra 30 to 45 minutes. A professional transfer service will advise you on departure time based on current conditions when you confirm the day before.
Variables That Change Everything
Traffic conditions on any given day can be significantly affected by road accidents on the A1 or A3, planned motorway maintenance, special events near Stade de France and public transport strikes (which increase road traffic substantially). During a transport strike in Paris, journey times from CDG can double.
