Paris in a Day: The Private Tour Itinerary Locals Recommend

6 min read

A single day in Paris is not enough to see everything, but it is enough to see the essential things beautifully. The key is to move efficiently between sites without rushing, to time your visits to avoid the worst crowds and to have someone else handle the logistics entirely. A private tour with a knowledgeable driver changes the experience completely.

Morning: The Right Bank

Start at Ile de la Cite

Begin at Notre-Dame de Paris, which has reopened to visitors after years of restoration following the 2019 fire. The square in front of the cathedral, the Parvis, offers the best view of the west facade. The Sainte-Chapelle, a short walk away on the same island, contains the most spectacular medieval stained glass in Paris and is best visited in the morning when the light falls from the east.

The Marais

From Ile de la Cite, cross to the Right Bank and into the Marais, the best-preserved historic neighbourhood in Paris. The Place des Vosges, the oldest planned square in the city, is worth a stop. The narrow streets around Rue de Bretagne and Rue des Rosiers are ideal for coffee and a slow walk before the rest of the day begins.

Midday: The Louvre and Tuileries

The Louvre is unavoidable on a first visit to Paris, but the approach matters. Limit your visit to two or three rooms with specific goals in mind: the Denon wing for the Mona Lisa and the Winged Victory, for example. Two hours is enough for a focused visit. After the Louvre, the Tuileries Garden offers a natural transition. A coffee at one of the terrace cafes, with a view of the Place de la Concorde and the beginning of the Champs-Elysees, provides a moment to regroup before the afternoon.

Afternoon: The Eiffel Tower and Left Bank

Eiffel Tower

The afternoon visit to the Eiffel Tower is recommended over the morning for one reason: the light. By 14:00, the tower is lit from the south, and in the late afternoon the golden hour light is spectacular. Book tickets in advance online to avoid the queue at the base. The view from the second floor is arguably better than from the summit, where the panorama is so wide it can be difficult to identify landmarks.

Saint-Germain and the Left Bank

From the Eiffel Tower, the 7th arrondissement leads naturally to Saint-Germain-des-Pres and the cafes and galleries of the Left Bank. Cafe de Flore and Les Deux Magots are famous and worth experiencing for their history. A walk along the Boulevard Saint-Germain towards the Odeon takes you through the intellectual heart of Paris.

Evening: Montmartre

End the day at Montmartre, the village on the hill in the 18th arrondissement. The Sacre-Coeur basilica at the summit offers one of the best views over Paris, particularly at dusk when the city begins to light up below. The streets around Place du Tertre, once the haunt of Picasso and Modigliani, retain a certain charm in the early evening.

A Note on Timing

The advantage of a private tour is that timing is entirely flexible. If you want to spend longer at the Louvre or skip Montmartre in favour of a dinner reservation, your driver adjusts. The itinerary above is a structure, not a constraint.
