A Journey Through Visual Stories
A 75-kilometre drive northwest of Paris, the village of Giverny is where Claude Monet lived for forty-three years and painted the works that defined Impressionism. Today his pink house, the Clos Normand flower garden and the Japanese-inspired water garden are open to visitors from April through early November - and on a private tour, you skip the lines, set your own pace and let your chauffeur handle every detail of the day.
The water lily pond is the icon: the wooden Japanese bridge, the wisteria in May, the lilies blooming through July and August. It is the living original of the Nymphéasseries hanging at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris. Stand on the bridge, frame the same view Monet painted hundreds of times, and the connection is immediate.
Beyond the gardens, the village rewards a slower visit. The Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny, a hundred metres from Monet's gate, traces how American artists followed Monet to Giverny in the 1880s. The Hôtel Baudy, once a pension where Renoir, Cézanne and Sisley took rooms and meals, still serves lunch. Monet himself rests in the small churchyard of Sainte-Radegonde.
